Hi All
Like most servers that run the same forum software that we do, we’ve been under attack from bots. Other owners are also struggling to control this as it basically means they are all making requests in the server and slows things down. We had several thousand last night trying to get in, other forums have reported as many as 80000 at the same time. This seems to come in waves, things are okay and then things start building. It’s been going on for several months, was really high in early March, calmed a bit, and for us at least, started going up again, but basically, it’s happening to most forums using the same software.
The main solution most boards have been trying is to move the site behind a proxy server, most are using Cloudflare, and that’s what we’ve done too. That’s what the owners of the software have done with their own board and what they are suggesting to help. I’ve turned on all the anti bot choices and have said we are under attack, which means that they’ve put extra security on when you try to access the page, you will likely see it too periodically, sorry, but it’s just checking to see if you are a bot or not.
The bots are still getting in, but at a slower rate, so we are still watching thing, right now the numbers of them is drastically reduced.
This is, frankly, ridiculous… but I guess this is the future of AI bots and agents just flooding any small site forcing only large sites to have the resources to deal with this. Grim.
Anyway… we’re doing what we can. Fingers crossed.
