Franco Cardini had written a review some 25 years ago. But he had only looked at the Essay from an historical point of view and rejected the Pythagorean origin of the ordinary French deck.
Michael Howard has analysed the Essay and concludes to a "Pythagorean framework".

Après avoir présenté les rudiments de la théorie musicale pythagoricienne, Gosselin commence le chapitre en affirmant :

Ce qui suit est son application du Pythagorisme aux cartes, et en particulier à un jeu nommé le Trente et Un. A ce point, je vais résumer sa présentation en ajoutant, entre parenthèses, quels sont, selon moi, les principes pythagoriciens impliqués.

1. Gosselin observe que chacune des trois figures, dans chaque série des enseignes, a une valeur en points de dix qui est la somme de 1+2+3+4. De plus, les cartes numérales qui sont au nombre de dix dans chacune des quatre séries des Enseignes, avec pas davantage que dix symboles des enseignes peints sur elles, n’excèdent pas dix en points ( Cette relation entre 4 et 10 est celle de la Tetractys Pythagoricienne : 1+2+3+4 = 10)


2. Les quatre enseignes correspondent aux quatre éléments.(Qu’il y ait quatre éléments est un postulat du Pythagorisme et de la plupart des philosophies de l’Antiquité. Mais, en général, les Pythagoriciens étaient à la recherche des rapports et des points communs entre les membres de différents groupes naturels d'un même nombre, corrélés par l'observation. En particulier, ils avaient noté que les ratios du poids des marteaux produisant différentes tonalités avaient les mêmes proportions les uns aux autres que celles de la longueur des cordes produisant des tonalités similaires. Gosselin discute de la longueur des cordes [vibrantes] dans le chapitre précédent; Nicomachus, dans son Manuel d'Harmonique, disait que Pythagoras examina différents marteaux frappant une enclume, une histoire que répète Iamblichus (Life of Pythagoras, trans.Taylor, 1986 reprint, p. 62 sur Google Books) et plusieurs autres auteurs - et même figuré sur le Campanile de Florence (image ci-dessous) 1437 (Christina Joost-Gaugier, Pythagoras and Renaissance Europe: Finding Heaven, 2009, p. 147 er p. 292 notes 10 and 11, citant John Pope-Hennessy, Lucca della Robbia, 1980, p. 33). 3. Entre l'enseigne française des Carreaux (carrelages de sol?) et la Terre existe le point commun de supporter des choses pesantes. Entre les Piques et le Feu existe le point commun du caractère pénétrant et d'être chacun le plus pénétrant de son groupe. Les Coeurs (dans nos corps) sont en relation de dépendance d'avec l' Air. Les Trèfles sont en relation de dépendance d'avec beaucoup d' Eau.
(Cette façon de procéder est conforme à la manière pythagoricienne de mettre en évidence des relations. Clairement ce n'est pas la seule façon dont les correspondances pourraient être établies)


4. En ce qui concerne "la plus excellente harmonie" du jeu, Gosselin observe qu'en musique, les séries de diapasons (que nous appellerions octaves) sont composées de notes en parfaites “consonances” l'une avec l'autre. Il y a diapason quand le rapport existant entre deux cordes vibrantes est de 2.1. D'où, une série de quatre diapasons à partir de l'unité : 1+ 2+4+8+16.
(Ceci est une application aux “4” Enseignes de la théorie musicale pythagoricienne - exposée dans le chapitre précédent de son livre).

5. La somme de 1+2+4+8+16 est de 31, soit le plus grand nombre de points possibles au jeu de Trente et Un. (Cette série en fait fut utilisée par Nicomachus comme partie de la méthode de génération des dits nombres “parfaits” : Introduction to Arithmetic, trans. D'Ooge, pp. 210-211. Je remercie Steve Mangan et Alain Bougearel sur Tarot History Forum pour ce point et cette référence). En conséquence, même si le nombre 31 comme somme des quatre premières “consonances” musicales n’appartenait pas à la théorie musicale pythagoricienne présentée par Gosselin dans son chapitre précédent, l’emploi de telles sommes est certainement une technique typiquement pythagoricienne).


6. Pour toutes ces raisons, selon son point de vue, le jeu est propre à illustrer la philosophie pythagoricienne.


Ma conclusion est que Gosselin a en fait, mis, dans un cadre pythagoricien, toutefois de façon arbitraire, les quatre enseignes du jeu français et quelques unes des principales caractéristiques du jeu de Trente et Un, spécifiquement la valeur maximale des points possibles pouvant être gagnés à 31.
Cependant, il n'a pas prouvé que le jeu de cartes ainsi que la façon de jouer aient été conçus en ayant présent à l’esprit des principes pythagoriciens- encore moins quant aux enseignes françaises qui n'apparaissent qu'autour de 1470, bien après la standardisation des 4 suites du jeu de cartes. De plus, d'autres nombres de suites ont vu le jour auparavant mais, mis à part le cas particulier des suites du Tarot, elles n'eurent pas de postérité. Cela provient peut-être du fait que 4 créerait les conditions d'un meilleur jeu que 3 ou 5, sous réserve qu'il y ait 2- 4 joueurs. En outre, le nombre 4 possède une signification en-dehors du Pythagorisme, par exemple les quatre coins d'un jeu de table, ou bien sûr les quatre saisons etc - en dehors de l'arithmologie pythagoricienne. Que les Enseignes françaises du jeu de cartes soient des carreaux, des trèfles, des coeurs et des piques n’est sans doute pas dû aux associations aux quatre éléments ; les relations proposées sont plutôt artificielles. Quand je pense à l ‘ Air par exemple, le “Coeur” n’est pas quelque chose qui me vienne naturellement à l’esprit. Il existe de meilleures explications pour les Enseignes françaises en relation avec les jeux antérieurs - germaniques ou latins.Pour ce qui est du nombre 31, il s’agit simplement du résultat généré par les règles du jeu. Qu’il appartienne à un nombre d’une série pythagoricienne n’est pas surprenant car de nombreux nombres faisaient partie des séries pythagoriciennes. Quant à 10, c’ est un nombre aisé pour faire la somme des points lors d'une partie. Il pourrait bien y avoir d'autres considérations, en fonction des règles de ce jeu spécifique.

One can legitimately count:
- from the 1st Allegory to the 22nd: the Bagat is the first Triumph and the Math is the 22nd, after the 21st, the World

or indeed:

- from 0 to the 21st allegory: the Math is the 0th Triumph; the Bagat is the first, and the World, twenty-first.

In summary:
- the Math is the 22nd in ordinal position in a count of 1 to 22
or
- the Math is 0th in ordinal position in a count from 0-21.

I think the part added to the conclusion is helpful and well presented. I have problems with his addition to the beginning, however. It seems to me not the state of current research that the point in time when the tarot stabilized at 22 was the last quarter of the 15th century. That is merely some people's conjecture, based on not much. The Boiardo poem could have been written any time between around 1460 and his death in 1494. SteveM has recently argued on THF that its style is that of his early period. A date of 1487 is pure conjecture, for the one poem of interest. And whenever it was written, it only indicates that 22 was standard by then, not that it happened just then. As for the Sola-Busca, while it seems to be accepted by most that the Sola-Busca, which has 22 triumphs from 0 to 21, was done around 1491, that again only tells us that it was 22 by then. The same is true for the Sermones. Also, Franco has just in the last month or so put out a note arguing that even if it was not 22 at the beginning, it most likely stabilized sooner than is usually thought, by 1450 or a few years after. And it is still quite reasonably possible that the tarot was 22 from the start, even if I personally think that less likely than that there was a series of stages. There is also the famous "15 to 20 year lag" that Andrea tells us we can expect for changes in fashion to get reflected in documents, although it may happen much sooner or take even longer. So it serves nothing to put in such a claim as Alain does at the beginning of his essay, quite incidental to what he has to say.

"The Theologumena came to the West from Constantinople in the middle of the 15th century as part of the collection of Bessarion, the Greek prelate turned Roman Catholic Cardinal. After Bessarion's 1469 death, his collection became the nucleus of the Biblioteca Marciana of the Republic of Venice, available for borrowing by qualified citizens. Copies of Bessarion's manuscript found their way to Florence and Naples. The one in Florence reportedly contains marginal notations in the handwriting of the Florentine scholar Poliziano. He is my candidate for the one who introduced Neopythagoreanism into the tarot, probably with with his friend Giovanni Pico della Mirandola. Entre janvier et juin 1446, il participa à une ambassade auprès de la curie pontificale à Rome à titre d'apprenti dans les services de la chancellerie florentine.
Dans les années 1450, il s'intégra au cercle de lettrés constitué autour de Cosme de Médicis : en 1456, Marsile Ficin soumettait ses Institutiones ad Platonicam disciplinam (œuvre perdue) à son jugement et à celui de Cosme. À cette date il était déjà lecteur de grammaire au Studio, et en 1456, il devint l'un des assistants du vieux Poggio Bracciolini, qui était chancelier de Florence. Le 18 janvier 1458, il fut nommé professeur de rhétorique et de poésie au Studio, grâce à l'appui décisif des Médicis, ... il innova en 1466 en faisant cours sur le Canzoniere de Pétrarque. Landino fut un promoteur de la littérature en langue italienne. À partir de la fin des années 1460, il commenta également la Divine Comédie de Dante.

C'est entre 1472 et 1474 qu'il composa son dialogue philosophique en latin intitulé les Disputationes Camaldulenses, des entretiens supposés se dérouler dans le monastère de Camaldoli entre les frères Médicis (Laurent et Julien) et plusieurs des humanistes de leur entourage (Ficin, Acciaiuoli, Landino lui-même) sur les thèmes platoniciens de la vie contemplative et du souverain bien, et sur une interprétation allégorique de l'Énéide. Vers la même époque, il composa aussi un dialogue De anima, consacré à la conception platonicienne de l'âme, et dont le principal interlocuteur est son maître Carlo Marsuppini

Il est né à Athènes en août 1423. En 1447, il émigre en Italie où le cardinal Bessarion le prend sous sa protection. En 1463, il devient professeur à Padoue. En 1479, il est appelé à Florence par Laurent de Médicis1 pour y reprendre le poste laissé vacant par Jean Argyropoulos. En compagnie de Marsile Ficin, Ange Politien et Théodore de Gaza il contribue à la renaissance des lettres grecques en Europe occidentale. Pendant son séjour à Florence, il a parmi ses nombreux élèves le philosophe et théologien allemand Johannes Reuchlin, l'érudite Alessandra Scala....
En 1492, il revient à Milan où il meurt le 9 janvier 1511.
