The geneanet is a sort of "Earnie and the cookie monster" .... it becomes dysfunctional.

Here is a work of Lanez about cartiers in Dijon

Yes, it is excellent. Not only does he through his research convincingly identify the engraver of the Pierre Madenie tarot as Claude Pater, but relevant for this thread is the suggestion that the Madenie [Type II] pattern may have previously been made in Lyon too. [Cesar Ballay being the successor to Joseph Boulland, Master Cartier of Lyon, via marriage to his widow].

I thought it had been discussed on here before, but from a search apparently not - it was discussed on the f/b history group.

I recall reading about some controversy regarding Valentin's usage of 'sole cartier to the emperor', but for the life of me, I can't remember where I read at the moment.
My thanks to Thierry Depaulis for refreshing my memory:

» (F. Does this mean the Austrian Emperor?

This would mean Leopold I., .... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leopold_I ... an_Emperor .... lived 9 June 1640 – 5 May 1705
Leopold fought three wars against France: the Franco-Dutch War [1672 to 1678], the Nine Years' War [1688–1697], and the War of the Spanish Succession [1701–1714].
