Re: What are the documents for Marziano's dates?

Well,
it depends, what one makes out of "tout fait à personnaiges".
If one follows the idea, that "all motives on all cards were connected to 'personnaiges'" , then we have 3 or 4 known decks which fulfill the condition.

a. the favoured 60-cards-deck observed by John of Rheinfelden. 4x5 are court cards with persons, the 4x10 number cards show professions.
b. the Höfämterspiel with 24 court cards (unnumbered kings + queens, numbered Hofmeister (number 10), Marshalls (9), Junckfrawe (6), Fools (1)) and 24 Hofämter (numbers 2, 3, 4, 5. 7, 8)
c. the Sola-Busca Tarocchi, in which the number cards were decorated with persons
d. the German deck, which was made for the wedding of the Habsburg children with Spanish heirs in the 1490s ... most (but not all) of the number cards show persons

But is it totally sure, that the reading is correct? At least the original text was handwritten, not printed. So a reading mistake might have happened easily..

Ferry II married a daughter of Rene I d'Anjou, Yolande * 1428, who was his own cousin. Rene I was his father-in-law.
Yolande might have gotten the deck with gods of Marcello from her mother Isabelle de Lorraine.
Ferry II and Yolande had the son Rene II, who later played with Trionfi cards.
Ferry II died 1470 (he was not duke of Lorraine), Rene II became duke of Lorraine in 1473, then 22 years old.

Lorraine was at the Eastern part of France, near the domain of the house of Luxembourg. Easily one might have gotten there playing card customs and styles from the Luxembourg dynasty, which probably had a leading role in early playing card production.

Hi Alain,
I had doubts about the identification of "Ferry II de Lorraine de Vaudemont" with "Ferri, monseigneur" in the copied text cause of the "monseigneur", but I found in the text of ...
https://books.google.de/books?id=3T5FAA ... ur&f=false
... the passage "le Comte de Vaudemont, (Footnote 1) Ferry Monseigneur de Lorraine" and as Footnote 1"Ferri II, Comte de Vaudémont depuis 1447, fils d'Antoine Comte de Vaudémont".
So it seems clear, that this person might be easily "Ferri II, son-in-law to René d'Anjou since 1445", when he married Jolande * 1428, the daughter of René and Isabella de Lorraine.

My first thought was something like the Hofämterspiel as well.

But "personnaiges" can refer to pagan gods, e.g. https://books.google.fr/books?id=O3tfAA ... wQ6AEIcDAJ
"neuf personnaiges et ymages des dieux payens" .

I have always imagined that Michelino's miniature paintings were stunning and beautiful, and probably much talked about among Isabelle and René's circle. They were probably unique, a novelty. Perhaps they had an influence on the depiction of the pagan gods.

So, it occurs to me that we might start to look for such depictions, in paintings and manuscripts, which were made in and around Saumur and radiating out from there, starting in 1450. These might reflect what Michelino's depictions looked like.

Re: What are the documents for Marziano's dates?

I saw "personnaiges" also used for 9 or 18 heroes ... and also others. In the case of René allegorical figures from the Roman de la rose would be logical ... cause his following interest in the love theme.

Isabella was more or less from Germany, close to Straßburg, which was a playing card production center. So she knew about German creativity with cards. German decks from 15th / early 16th century showed a lot of variants . So a lot of objects might have been these "personnaiges".

Scipio Carafa had the idea, that Isabella would be enjoyed about the curious cheap Trionfi deck, that he observed in the camp of Marcello. It was Marcello's idea, that this cheap deck is not good enough. But Scipio Carafa possibly knew, that Isabella was a sort of playing card collector, happy about any unusual deck.

P.S. Also I remember, that we once - long ago - persecuted a sort of Trionfi order, that was arranged by Rene d'Anjou and which influenced French carnival processions. It contained the strange figure of the Italian condottiero Montefeltro.
viewtopic.php?f=11&t=494&p=6509&hilit=m ... 1462#p6509
1. Montefeltro appears as a figure in a Provencal carnival march (in other words, in a sort of Trionfi march), a tradition possibly founded on the Anjou/Aragon conflict about Naples in the year 1462, in which Montefeltro had guiding function in the Naples troops, that is at the enemy side of Anjou (so it seems, that Montefeltro appears as a hated figure in the March). Provence was then reigned by Renee d'Anjou, who had spend some time in Italy as regent of Naples and lost it against Alfonso of Aragon in 1442. ....
This case was researched a few years in the LTarot group, but finished without sure results bout the real context.

monnaie.La veille de la grande procession avait lieu le passado ;

d'or.

FESTIVAL-GOD PROCESSION in Aix (Bouches-du-Rhône) (According to an article
published in 1836) This procession had been instituted, around the year 1462,
by King René. He had borrowed, to make it a spectacle
magnificent, all that the poetic verve of that time knew how to mix with
sacred and secular, ancient history and modern history. The
Pentecost Monday, appointment of the main chiefs took place
of the festival: the king of Basoche, the prince of Love, the abbot of the

wanted to take part in the ceremony were registered. They

The eve of the great procession took place the passado;
around noon, the Bâtonniers, after having heard Mass beforehand
at the cathedral, ran through the city at a run, music in
head, stopping at every corner to give passersby the
show of their address. Then they went to the Course where
the ford took place, that is to say the distribution of costumes for
the next day. The provost, accompanied by the aldermen, proclaimed the name
of the Olympian gods, who successively came to line up near
him. The next day, Corpus Christi Day, the procession started
walks to the sound of bells at a high speed. First presented themselves
four Bâtonniers loaded with colored ribbons, or by the Abbé de
Youth, either from the King of Basoche, according to whether they belonged
to either of these two heads; then the
workshops of the Count of Provence, each carrying a torch. King René

They preceded the Fame, mounted on a horse, which led
four sampodophores (torch bearers); the costume of the goddess
with a hundred voices was a yellow dress on which were painted the
weapons of the main Provencal lords; two painted wings
also in yellow came out of the dress by two slits made
shoulders; his hairstyle was a hat also yellow and covered
Two groups followed the fame: the first was
composed of Knights of the Crescent, military order instituted by
King René. This order, famous in the splendours of the history of
Provence had armor as it was worn in those times; a
crescent that the knights had on their chest and their
helmets, indicated that their value should always go in
growing, and distinguished them from other warriors. A music
separated them from the Duke and Duchess of Urbino, mounted on
donkeys. The grotesque figures of these unhappy princes
recalled one of René's trophies, which defeated Urbino in 1460. The
duchesse d'Urbin was the daughter of Alexandre Sforce, whom the duke had
married in 1459, after the death of Gentile de Braccaleone, his first
The vociferations and the taunts of the people welcomed
still the image of this general, who, for having been defeated once,
was nonetheless one of the most remarkable of its time. Momus
followed these two groups; his clothes were full of thousands
colors and covered with bells; with one hand he swung the hobby horse
on the head of the crowd, and on the other he was holding his mask.

Main entrance to the city of Aix, by A. Meunier, in 1792

Mercury accompanied him. This god, in this circumstance, does not
was not the protector of trade and industry, but
only that of thieves. To this end, he relied on the Night
which covered it with its black coat dotted with stars and poppies
charivari, a meeting of acute noises and discords seeking to imitate the
weeping and gnashing teeth from hell, announced the black
Pluto. Five different groups made up his cortege: the first
was that of the Razcassetos; they were the lepers of Scripture:
they were all fitted with combs, brushes, scissors and
sponges, constantly taking care to brush, comb and wash one
of them, who vainly sought to escape their vows
offices.Lou play two cat appeared after the Razcassetos. Moses
carried the tables of the law; his forehead was adorned with two spokes
bright that tradition gives it. Aaron was close to him, and
sought to explain the divine law to the Israelites; but they do
they mocked the words of the high priest, and danced around the calf
gold. One of them was holding a young cat that he threw in the air and
was falling in his fall with a lot of address, that's what
gave this group the name of cat game, lou play two cat.
Finally Pluto, Proserpine, accompanied him, both dressed in robes
black flamed with flames; with one hand, they had their scepts
of ebony, and of the other the keys of the dark empire; the demons the
surrounded by demonic dances in front and behind. No
the fourth group represented the pichoum jouec deis devils (small
devils game). A child dressed in white was a soul, only one
angel was leading by the hand, showing him the cross. Devils
they were always trying to hit their masses or their whips
unhappy soul; but the blows fell on the angel whose back
was probably upholstered. The Devils' great game followed
the little one, and the cortege of the God of hell ended; Herod, clad
of the badges of royalty, he was angry with the fury of demons,
who were harassing him with forks and bites, ringing
insolently their bumps around his head. The devil was doing it
notice in the middle of them; she was a woman dressed in taste
the most modern, personification of coquetry. The gods of the
sea followed those of hell; their costumes were light blue,
as is azure water; they surrounded Neptune, whose hand
was armed with the dreaded trident; the winds were ringing around him
a lively dance. Chapel of the Conventes Grands Carmes, at
Thus, about 1820

Country music announced the gods of the earth; the nymphs,
clad in green robes like the leaves of the woods, they mingled theirs
dances with satyrs; these had legs covered
hairy skin; the upper part of their bodies was covered with a vest
the color imitated that of the flesh; a long tail and horns
completed the costume. Pan, similarly dressed, followed them playing
of the flute. This tank, covered with pamphlets and green leaves,
Bacchus announced: it was he who was sitting on it
barrel; in one hand he held a bottle, and in the other one
cut. He was about to drink, and as soon as he had dipped his lips
in the cup, she was snatched away by the wildlife that made up
her suite, and who lived it. Also this part of the procession
she was one of the most cheerful. Mars and Minerve followed Bacchus; no
first wore the costume of knights in the time of Louis XI, and the
second that of the ladies of the court. She also held the spear and
the head of Medusa, then came the chavaouz frux (horses
fringants). This part of the procession was definitely the most
curious. Knights in Rene's court were running on
their exercise horses, as seen in Franconi; but he
it seems that these lords did not have the same address as those
last squires because, in one of these processions, several
of them fell and were killed. It was decided when they were
would replace men with cardboard horses
attached to their belts, and which would repeat in a lesser way
dangerous the exercises of their ancestors. St. John's Church, at
Thus, in 1846
Diane and Apollo followed these formidable horsemen; Diana
carried his bow and arrows; Apollo, his harmonious lyre and the
morning rooster. The Hours followed them holding hands. The
next group represented the Queen of Sheba's visit to the great
King ; she greeted him with green twigs and swinging her
body from right to left. Solomon, to honor him, performed
before her a lively and lively dance, lowering her dreaded sword to
the point of which was attached the castlet (small castle)
topped by five weather vanes; this castlet figured the temple that this
monarch raised. The queen's wives followed her, each holding
a cup, present of the holy king. Dancing pichnoux and adults
dancers, two groups of dancers, preceded the chariot of the gods.
This one beautifully decorated, covered with the richest carpets,
driven by six superb richly caparisoned white horses,
supported several thrones: on the highest was Jupiter, the
lightnings in hand; Juno was at her feet, she caressed the peacock her
privileged bird; Venus and Love were seated near her; the
Games and Ris surrounded the chariot.
Behind were the three parks, Clotho, Lachésis and Atropos,
rolling, spinning and cutting the days of mortals. Herod the
followed; he presided over the massacre of the Innocents. His guards, armed
rifles, fired into the air, and a dozen children threw themselves at
earth with loud cries. The Magi, the Apostles, the
Evangelists also figured in this procession; she was
completed by the Prince of Love, the Abbot of Youth and the King of the
Basoche. René had personified, in these three heads of the
procession, nobility, clergy and people; all three
walked on the same line; all three had a horse from the
same color and same size; all three had the same
after. In this circumstance, but in that one alone, was found
equality. Such was the procession of Aix in 1490, and already some
characters, such as Adam, Eve, Cain, Abel, the Patriarchs, etc.,
were deleted. The procession of the Blessed Sacrament, as well as
was observed a few years ago in Paris, followed this
procession. In 1645, and mainly in 1680, the archbishops of the
city wanted to suppress the secular scenes of this ceremony; the
discontented people threatened to burn the archbishopric, and the prelates
renounced their censorship. The party therefore continued without obstacle
until 1789. At that time, the Revolution, which overthrew all
ceremonies of Catholic worship, also abolishes the procession of Aix:
it was resumed at the time of the Concordat; but then she was fine
fallen from her old quirk.

monnaie.La veille de la grande procession avait lieu le passado ;

The
Pentecost Monday, appointment of the main chiefs took place
of the festival: the king of Basoche, the prince of Love, the abbot of the
Youth, and some other great dignitaries. The day of
Trinity, were elected the junior officers, and all those who
wanted to take part in the ceremony were registered. They
roamed the city singing and dancing, stopping in front of the
beautiful-looking houses, from which a few pieces of
The eve of the great procession took place the passado;
around noon, the Bâtonniers, after having heard Mass beforehand
at the cathedral, ran through the city at a run, music in
head, stopping at every corner to give passersby the
show of their address.

A text from 1808, in which an author Coste answers to an author with the name Millin. The name Millin is given as a reference in the other connected texts, for instance the German text of 1811.

I've the impression, that Millin was responsible for the stuff about the festivities in Aix.

Aubin Louis Millin (* 1759, + 1818) got a lot of attention in the following German book:
