vedendo in voi quella faccina allegra. 12
straniera et nostra, et non so come mista,
Chi facesse un quinterno et una lista
de le parole vostre, avria in quei detti
materia da far lieta ogni alma trista. 33
Quando dite la causa per gli effetti
et quando usate certe abbreviature,
sempre ha nel vostro dir novi intelletti. 36
Et tutto il rimanente de la corte
v’amano et riveriscono egualmente,
o sian di bassa o sian di nobil sorte. 48
Or, perché sète un uomo sì eccellente
darvi qualche piacer, sapendo chiaro
Et perché vedo quanto vi sia caro
giocar al Malcontento spesse volte,
gioco degno d’un uom come voi raro, 57
Finché l’alta materia io stenda et tratti,
ad or ad or sempre materia nova. 72
Quel che in piè guarda et quel che gioca assiso,
la parte del piacer parimente hanno:
ciascun vi gode come in Paradiso. 75
O mi sia data carta o mi sia tolta,
ho sempre nova spettativa inante
di veder come la fortuna volta. 81
Non è bisogno ch’io rivolga tante
carte, et getti et raccoglia et conti et parta:
Non è come la noia de’ tarocchi,
ch’a volger tante carte par che stracchi559
non pur le mani ma, a vederle, gli occhi560. 90
Né men come la flemma degli scacchi ,
che tiene tanti officii et tanti gradi
et vi son tanti matti et tanti schiacchi561; 93
né men come il crudel giuoco de’ dadi,
che ritrovar cagion per me non vaglio,
Cedagli la primiera564 d’Alemagna,
el gioco di trionfo et di runfetto 565
e ’l tre dua asso, ancor che sia di Spagna566. 102
Essaminate pur con l’intelletto
ogni gioco ch’al mondo sia entrodutto,
ch’a ciascun trovarete il suo difetto. 105
voi sète a chi vi vede dilettoso,
il gioco quei che l’usan tra’ di guai;
voi pien d’ingegno e il gioco ingenioso. 117
Sempre richiede intorno gran famiglia
In ogni gioco ch’a scoprir si vegna,
un asso almeno sempre vi si scorge,
a ciò ch’in riso la brigata tegna. 129
et me ne vien desio, posso cangiarla? 147
Dirà qualcuno: – Et s’averrà che toglia
cosa che più che quella ti dispiaccia,
non ti sarà cagion di maggior doglia? 150
Or non saria grandissimo piacere,
sì come qui si cangiano le carte,
che tra noi si cangiasser le mogliere? 156
Io so c’avria facende la fortuna,
femine et maschi veneriano a porvi,
ciascun voria tentar la sua fortuna. 162
Petti esil, ventri gonfi, omeri córvi,
piè soverchi, man corte, orecchie estense,
So che ’l principe nostro569 per uom grande,
et voi per picciolin, non trovareste
che guadagnare in queste o in altre bande; 171
ché quanto potea dar forza celeste
qua giù di bello a duo corpi diversi,
tutto nascendo ambo voi duo l’aveste. 174
Lasciamo a parte il prencipe, suggetto
grande, ma canterei sera et matina
di voi, Sanseverin mio pargoletto. 180
Voi sète gemma oltr’ogni gemma fina,
ch’asconde in picciol corpo gran virtute
et perché è preciosa, è picciolina. 183
Io so che combatteste a campo franco
c’avete i segni ancor de l’altrui spada
Negli altri giochi al perditor le guancie
si spargono talor di pallidezza
come incontro gli andassen spade et lancie. 218
Non eran stati in paradiso un giorno
Adamo et Eva che, da poi mangiate
le poma, questo gioco cominciorno. 227
Nacquer le genti et crebber le brigate,
il cominciato gioco a poco a poco
andò passando d’una in altra etate. 230
Giocan le genti dotte et le idiote,
quei che sudditi son, quei che son capi,
Et le turbe vicine et le rimote. 248
Villani, gentiluomini, satrapi,
Tutti, o sian vecchi o gioveni o ragazzi,
Io son d’oppinion che in terra, avanti
ch’a godersi nel cielo andasser lieti,
giocâro al Malcontento tutti i santi. 266
O gioco nato a dominar la terra,
a conquistar il ciel, gioco disposto
a metter pace ovunque fusse guerra, 281
gioco di gran piacer, di picciol costo
e d’util grande, gioco d’esser degno
a tutti per prammatica anteposto! 284
Ma troppo, Sansevrino, io mi prolungo,
male osservo il decoro del poeta,
voi sète corto et io v’ho detto a lungo. 290
Sanseverin gentil, quando il commune
padron tempo vi dà, fatemi gratia
spender a questo gioco et soli et lune. 299
giocate sempre, o siate molti o pochi,
o corra la ventura o la disgratia. 302

The short passage in the poem was reported and referenced by Nicola Antonia de Giorgio in "Playing Cards and Tarots in Naples, 15th-18th century", IPCS vol. 34, number 2, p. 101 (2005)

In the same article the "Gioco del Malcontento" appears in a decree on 6th of April 1585, confirmed 23rd of January 1586, where it is counted as a lawful game in this row: "A piccetto, tarocchi, venti figure, gilè, sbracare, al malcontento, a trapolare, alla gabella, a primiera ordinaria, a primiera scoperta, seu sommaria, et a runfo."

Hmm... "venti figure" - 20 figures? Isn't that interesting.

"a trapolare" - trappola?

Yes - it's interesting, cause I speculate, that there once had been a dominating model with 20 trump cards. But I'm skeptical in this case.
But "venti figure" seems to be only a game name in Naples. I didn't find any description.

This Mitelli game (so likely from Bologna, as Mitelli worked in Bologna) uses 20 figures. 4-18 are numbered (15 elements), the rest are unnumbered (5 elements).
Something similar appears in the Minchiate (5 not numbered "arie" inside one group with 20 elements - first group 1-15 + unnumbered 36-40).
18, the highest, shows the only woman. The other 19 figures are "lovers" with different qualities. But the game possibly was played with dice (?) ... so that's likely not the card game "20 figure" from Napoli.

"20" is just another useful number for games - as "22".
20 are 10 fingers and 10 toes - well known and accepted by the Maya. The structure 5-15 seems to associate this.

**************

I found another game of Mitelli, which seems rather similar: again 20 figures, again dice are indicated, same structure (as it seems). This time the game is about Italian kitchen.

At Tarotpedia somebody wrote about another Mitelli-game ...

http://www.tarotpedia.com/wiki/Mitelli, ... l_Contento

... the Gioco Nuove del Contento, perhaps this is a - somehow - contrasting game to the Gioco al Malcontento.

For the game Malcontento:

I got the information (thanks to Franco Pratesi), that a recent article in IPSC, vol 39, p. 232-33 (2011) by Kimihiko Kuromiya asked and answered a similar question: "A note on the history of Cuccù".

According this "al Malcontento" presents another name of Cuccù. It's assumed, that Cuccù developed in France around 1490. The text of Luigi Tansillo 1547 is seen as the first sign, that the game had reached Italy.

http://www.pagat.com/cuckoo/index.html

The text offers another link to the text of Tansillo:
http://books.google.fr/books?id=rlg0AAA ... &q&f=false

The article points to the author Saverio Franchi:

Saverio Franchi thinks, that the game is older. He thinks, that "al Malcontento" alias Cuccù has developed from a dice (or "taxilli") game Gnaffus, which was noted twice in Bologna 1250 and 1286. Gnav is still an expression for games of the cuckoo group.
Compare: http://www.pagat.com/cuckoo/gnav.html
Generally it's assumed, that special cuckoo cards weren't used in the early time.

Franchi lives near Teramo, which earlier had close relations to Naples. Cuccù is still played in the region, so Franchi's interest developed.

So far nothing to the game "venti figure".

Re: Luigi Tansillo 1547

After some research and analyses about the Mitelli-variants of dice games with 3 dice, which use a 14+6 scheme ...

14 for the results of a throw with 3 dice without triple results (4-5-6-7-8-9-10-11-12-3-14-14-16-17)
6 for the triple results 1-1-1, 2-2-2, 3-3-3, 4-4-4, 5-5-5, 6-6-6

compare
viewtopic.php?f=11&t=715

... I came to the conclusion, that the observed objects are distant "Grand Hazard" variants. Hazard games with two dice are called generally "Hazard", games with 3 dice are called "Grand Hazard". Maybe somewhere exists a dice game name which comes nearer to the observed objects, but I don't know it.

Hazard
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hazard_%28game%29

"Sic Bo" is called a grand Hazard game
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sic_bo

A modern Sic Bo Table

The relevance of the 14-6 scheme can be recognized.

In modern Hazard and Grand Hazard games play against a bank. For the more "private" Mitelli games I would assume, that a pseudo-bank is created by the players with a payment at the begin of the game. In contrast to the modern Hazard games I cannot identify a betting process outside of the actual game ... I assume, the players had to throw the dice themselves and got an immediate result: either paying or taking (different values according the result - the relevant "20 figure" Mitelli table gives the result either with T for "Take" or "tira" or p for "Pay" or pagare). Generally a throw with 6-6-6 finishes the games ... the winner takes it all and the pseudo-bank is empty.

Here is an example with the Occhi (eyes) game:

Image

The fields are filled with "P." and "T." values. I assume, that P. means pagare and "pay" and T. means "take".
If I leave the fields with dice-pictures (1+1+1, 2+2+2 etc.) aside, then I've P4 (= "pay 4"), P2 and P1 and T3 (= "take 3") and T1 values.

14 fields have number values ranging from 4-17. I interpret, that these are the results of throws with 3 dice (4 = 1+1+2 and 17 = 6+6+5), and I realize, that the also possible 1+1+1 and 6+6+6 results have a special state and aren't included in this group.

So I have 14 fields with numbers and 6 with special status, together 20 (which form the 20 figure ... so indeed, somehow it is a logical number taken from dice).

Following now the different P. and T values, I get this

P4 appears only once: 11
P2 appears: 4-7-10-15
P1 appears: 8-12-13-17

T3 appears only once: 6
T1 appears: 5-14

We have further T-values with
  • 1-1-1 takes 1
    2-2-2 takes 2
    3-3-3 takes 3
    4-4-4 takes 4
5-5-5 tales the half of the bank
    6-6-6 wins it all
Something special happens at 16 and 9 : 16-9
I interpret (according my difficulties with Italian language):
16 ... the player doesn't take or pay anything ("Bocca Storta Non Pagare" - "bowed mouth pays nothing")
9 ... the player gets "6" (?) and has opportunity for a next throw (?) ("Bocca Ridente Ridi E Canta Sei Esente" - Smiling mouth smiles and sings "six tax allowances" or "six allowable deductions" ... "Esente" is difficult ) - which is difficult to evaluate. Possibly the player gets six throws with the dice without risk to pay anything.

******************

Analyzing this Pay and Take scheme:

The results 5-5-5 and 6-6-6 seem to be the big-winner-combinations ... 5-5-5 gets the half of all money, 6-6-6 gets all.

There's much more paying than taking, so more or less the money in the pot increases till 6-6-6

I checked the probabilities:

4 (and 17) = 3/216
5 (and 16) = 6/216
6 (and 15) = 9/216
7 (and 14) = 15/216
8 (and 13) = 21/216
9 (and 12) = 24/216
10(and 11) = 27/216

So in 216 (216 = 6x6x6) throws the whole has an average increase ...

P4 (27x4)= + 108
P2 (3x2)+(15x2)+(27x2)+(9x2) = + 108
P1 (21x1)+(24x1)+(21x1)+(3x1) = + 72

T3 (9x3) = - 27
T1 (6x1)+(15x1) = - 21
1-1-1 + 2-2-2 + 3+3+3 + 4+4+4 = T1+T2+T3+T4 = - 10

... so 288 - 58 = + 230, it's a rather high increasing factor, if nothing special (no result of "9", no 5-5-5, no 6-6-6) would happen.

However, a result of "9" (24/216) is rather common (11.11% that's c. 1/9 ... in contrast to 5+5+5 and 6+6+6, which each have a 1/216 chance). If my interpretation above, that the player has 6 tax-free-throws, is correct, the player has a good chance to win a few units (with no new occurrence of 9 or 5-5-5 or 6-6-6 something between 0-18 units, whereby "18" should be very rare and common a win of 2-3) ... but he also has a very good chance to throw another "smiling 9" with additional 6 tax-free throws (a 66.66 % probability). And this chance might repeat again and again ...

A game with possibly 300-400 throws, in which no rare 5+5+5 or 6-6-6 occurs might have become a rather boring game. However, with this additional rule for the "smiling mouth 9" a really interesting game with quick advance would be given. Naturally any other player would hope, that the single lucky player would end his lucky series, but the single player has some good chances to finish the game with it.

***************

The other games of Mitelli with 20-figure structure differ from this game and might contain other interesting factors ... I haven't analyzed them for the moment.

Back to Tarot:
We have according the 5x14-theory a game development from a 5x14-game, which got an addition of 6 cards later (observable in the Pierpont-Morgan-Bergamo Tarocchi) ... something, which is assumed to have happened between 1450 - 1465.
Dice games had been much more popular than playing cards ... dice games are simply older. We have to assume, that in 1450 the structure 14+6 - as used by Mitelli - was known (Hazard is "old", derived as a name from Arabic "azar").

The dice results of throws of 3 dice is generally considered to have influenced the choice of the Tarot deck structure 1+21+56 (21 as the results with 2 dice; 56 as the results with 3 dice; well ... the question was only, how "intensive" this influence had been; especially Alain Bougearel had specific theories to this point in the past).

Now we have another "old dice game structure" also for the development from 5x14-deck to 4x14+20 form.

I wrote this some time in another thread with some relevance to the Cuccù game:

Grattaculo
with "culo" meaning "ass" and Grattaculo meaning "Ass-Scratcher"

Image

... and as such it appears in a Venetian version of the Cuccù game, otherwise according Franco Pratesi in IPCS 19, p. 76, also called Cacaccio with the meaning of dysentery. This card is the lowest of the 20 Cuccù-cards:

0 Grattaculo or Cacaccio (lowest)
00 Mascherone
000 Secchia
0000 Nulla
I
II
III
IV
V
VI
VII
VIII
IX
X
11 Taverna
12 Gnaff
13 Salta
14 Tuffo (Venetia: Bragon)
15 Cuccù (highest)
outside of the row: Matto

Naturally the lowest card has a very special role. The motif of the ass-scratcher is also found variously in older German playing cards (c. 1520-40), then integrated in the usual suits:

The Venetian picture of the ass scratcher is of a younger date. Franco Pratesi notes: "In the Jesuit collection of manuscripts at the National gallery in Rome some ancient cucù drawings are kept, which are older than most of the preserved cucù packs (Roma, Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale, Ms. Ges. 1364, cc. 59r-63r)". However, Franco's article c. 1990 was focused on 18th-20th century.
The article of Kimihiko Kuromiya 2011 (IPSC 39, p. 232) is much further developed, so there were improvements in this research field in the meantime. Kuromiya refers to Thierry Depaulis (L'as de Trèfle No. 11, 1981 p. 23-24; IPSC 24, p. 38-42) Anthony Smith (IPSC 19, p. 93-103; IPCS 20, p. 22-28), Franco Pratesi (as already mentioned) and Dan Glimne (Kortspelshandboken, Wahlströms, 1996).

The IPSC article of Depaulis is reachable ... and so I read, that Malcontento (or similar) had been the early name, not Cuccù. In a rough way Depaulis structured in his summary the development ...

16th century: Malcontento or similar
17th century: Hèri
18th century: Cuccù or Cuco

... according which Cuccù as name of the game appears rather late and .... my fine speculation drops in the sand. ... :-) ... This naturally changes the situation.

However, Rabelais (1534) knows a game "Cuco" and he lists it as not far from "Malcontento", so he knows both as two different games and it isn't the same for him ...
a la triumphe
a la picardie
au cent

a la malheureuse
au fourby
a passe dix
a trente et ung
a pair et sequence
a troys cens

a la condemnade

a qui a si parle
a pille,nade,iocque,fore
a mariaige
au gay
a lopinion
a qui faict lung faict laultre
a la sequence
au luettes
au tarau
..
Rabelais should have known at least a few of Folengo's texts ... they were possibly about the same age, and it even can't be completely excluded, that they once met.
But Depaulis' net seems rather full of with "mécontent", "maucontent", "malcontent" ... also he mentions a game Cartaccia, which should have been a similar game (and sounds similar to the card name "cacaccia", which was mentioned by Franco Pratesi as lowest value card), which appeared first 1510 in a letter of Macchiavelli and a few times later. Other names are "Gnav" and ""Hexenspiel", and perhaps a few other names, which aren't identified.

Well, and there is some similarity of Cuccù to the somehow fictive "Trionfi games with 20 special cards" ... this is also a greater problem.

Also some time ago I wrote this as part of theme "20 figure":

http://tarotforum.net/showthread.php?t= ... ight=cuccu
"Venti figure" appear from the darkness

In a report of Nicola Antonia de Giorgio in "Playing Cards and Tarots in Naples, 15th-18th century", IPCS vol. 34, number 2, p. 101 (2005), about the game Malcontento the author presents a decree on 6th of April 1585, confirmed 23rd of January [/b]1586, where it is counted as lawful games : "A piccetto, tarocchi, venti figure, gilè, sbracare, al malcontento, a trapolare, alla gabella, a primiera ordinaria, a primiera scoperta, seu sommaria, et a runfo."

I got interested and googled "Venti figure":

This refers to 1631 and also Naples

This note relates to 1732 and still refers to "Venti figure" and card games
Image

http://books.google.com/books?id=q10FAA ... co&f=false

again "venti figure", again Naples
http://books.google.com/books?id=I9UsAA ... CDIQ6AEwAg

From this I knew the expression "venti figure" and that it somehow was played in Naples. And it was a card game.

However, the article was about a game called "Il Malcontento".

Il Malcontento appeared for the first in a poem of 1547 of Luigi Tansillo, together with Tarocchi, Scacchi, Trionfo and Runfetto. The longer poem had the same "Il Malcontento" and praised the game.

Discussion of the Malcontento topic

**********
In another recent article in IPCS, vol 39, p. 232-33 (2011) by Kimihiko Kuromiya is asked and answered a similar question: "A note on the history of Cuccù".

***********

Cuccu cards are real, cause some decks survived. The "venti figure", whatever this might have been, is - at least for the moment - unknown, nearly fiction, just a documented name of an unknown card game as many others.

An interesting aspect of the Cuccu-Malcontento game, earlier "Gnaffus", is, that it started as a dice game (at least some serious game reseachers believe this). a dice game could mutate to a card game, similar as I earlier in the thread gave arguments, that Trionfi cards developed from the chess game.
