Yes, I agree that Vieville placed the animals as he did, and it matches some churches and some illustrations, just as the order on the Tarot de Marseille matches some churches and some illustrations. Personally, I think that the Vieville order is better, but then, that's part of the reason that Vieville is my favourite deck! :-bd

Personally I don't think that the representation of the four evangelists is going to give us a clue as to whether or not the Vieville is mirror imaged to what is likely to have been his model, for the simply point that variety occurs just too much.

What is more likely to give an an indication is when specific details have consistency. The four evangelists would, of course, have given us evidence for inversion had their location been otherwise pretty much fixed an established.

It would of course be wonderful to find entire (or near complete) decks that are woodblocks that antedate the 17th century (such as the Cary Sheet and Sforza Castle well cards).
