indeed that definiton was attested at least from the XVIIth century. It has recently been noted on the Tradition des Tarots de Marseille forum that bateleur also meant "sonneur de cloche" (bell ringer) circa 1490 (see here)

I think you'll find it interesting. I think the early cards remind me much more of "charlatan" than the modern interpretations allow. I've found that Googling is especially useful this way:
