If this is just addressed to Ross, then perhaps a PM would be better?

If you wish to start a conversation discussing this, then please fill the rest of us in on what we are looking at, and why we are looking at it???

What do you want to discuss?

I went to the site, and I can't even find a basic translation of "the theory" in English. So hopefully one of our Francophones will translate... well.. the basics.. for us???

The "gist" I have from what was mentioned earlier, what I see on the site, and what I am guessing is that Abbot Suger, from the Cluny monastery, invented tarot, and put a secret code into the Tarot de Marseille II as seen in Conver, that is, like a bar code in the title areas??? Yeah? @-)

* I am not agree with ROM hypothesis, for him is a fact, nor with Flornoy.
Also I am not agree with an aesthetic pupose.
And this is why I am asking for this topic.
Must a reason why.

1- Only five cards have them : 6 - 8 - 11 - 18 - 19
That s dont show any logical assignment.
I mean to be that cards and not others.
If it has an aesthetic purpose, the election is too arbitrary...
2-The sum of the bars of each card also don t explain anything to me.
3- Also I don t think that is a secret code of the engraver.
Moulds were not been broken at the time of Conver.

- But if they are there, must be a reason why.

I agree that there must be a 'reason', Eugim, just not that the reason must be such as to somehow be symbolically significant.

At one stage, I considered whether it possibly showed the 'hand' of different carvers over the blocks, but that doesn't make any real sense either. Quite frankly, as someone works over the course of a large block, why would it not be feasible to entertain the idea that next to some titles 'bars' are left (or 'added') and on other parts of the block they are not. If there is no intrinsic importance to these, than to leave them out or include some is not so important in the first instance, and they surely may be left without symbolic intent - or so I would have thought.

I think you have it, but if you want more you can read what he wrote when he first surfaced with the idea on TarotL in 2001
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TarotL/message/6967

Or this thread -
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TarotL/message/7019

Example of the Code in action -

"The number 666 has been coded all over the Tarot to express the
invisible presence of God. The word God in french is DIEU. On Arcanae
16 it appears as DIEV. If we exclude D, as we have to because D is
not a member Of the secret code of Tarot, we are left with IEV total:
36 or 3 x 6= 666.
IEV is also VIE , or life. in french.
Rom"

The brief answer is that, yes, there are plenty of other TdMs that have lines and squiggles in the spaces between the titles and the edge of the card, and not on every card but only some. There are horizontal and vertical lines, as well as a squiggle here and there.

A good example for comparison with the Conver is in Schweizer Spielkarten II, p. 139, a Tarot de Marseille by David Hurter (apparently), 1810.

There are others there too - probably also in Kaplan, where I haven't looked (SS is in colour, which is nicer).

I'll scan it when I get the inclination, if you need proof.
