Re: Collection: "3 Magi" and "3 theological virtues"

Thanks, I missed that appearance of "Caritas", which is rather dominant.

The Beinecke version is translated at http://brbl-archive.library.yale.edu/ex ... ted/1r.jpg.
The long sentences, across and up, seem the same in the two versions. But you will notice that the rows are not the same. "Venerere parente" (honor your parents) is in the 7th row, still in the row of "reverencia", now 7th instead of 4th. The Beinecke's 4th row has "Honesty". I don't even see that row in the De Lisle. What do you make of the differences?

There are some changes, some make not much, but some are structural.

The 12x10 table looks now like a 10x14 table.

Spes and Fides, before row 11 and row 12, are now the rows 12+13.

(1) Row 14 is made from something, which before had only 6 elements (so was not part of the observed 12 rows), not 10. Now it has 10.

(2) and (5): one earlier row (2) seems to be split and it got windows, which are taken from the windows (5) inclusive their words in the other already discussed version of "Tower of Wisdom" (see below).
Now each of the both new rows has 8 elements, but 4 windows contain 4 other words, so both rows have together 20 elements.

(3) is the door, which was moved in a similar way as the windows, but these words seem not belong to the 5x14-scheme.

(4) It's now better recognizable, that there are 7 steps at the staircase at the begin, and each step has its word.

I've no overview, how the words moved inside the table. The second table is on English, not in Latin, so hardly an "original", but just a description.
And the Latn original is difficult to decipher.

This figure, presented by MikeH before ...

... is actually rather different from the "Tower of Wisdom". It's titled "Radix virtutem" (at the bottom) and for this terminus I found this passage in ....
http://books.google.de/books?id=ayHUD_2 ... 22&f=false

Image

Each virtue-word got 7 attributed words, so totall 56 termini are presented in a logical context. As addition 8 figures are presented ... the 4 cardinal virtues recognizable, two theological virtues are presented as angels on top. Central is the figure of a male angel and Mary, who logically takes the role of "Caritas" and mother figure inside the virtues. The "promised son" Jesus is outside of the frame (still not born).

The number of the used elements is 56 + 8 = 64 ... well-known as the number of the fields on a chess board.

*************

It's a hypothesis (inside the expanded 5x14-theory), that in the Cary-Yale Tarocchi the figures of the 7 virtues were used as "7 of 8 pawns".

The number of "words" is again 56, the number of the figures (if I count the viper as a figure) is 63 (not 64). Adam+Eve and the viper are clear, the both other human figures and the two devils are not clear. One might be "Saturn" or he has at least similarity. One has to work in this world of vices.

If I count Jesus as the 65th element at the other picture about Virtues, I get for the two pages twice the number 64, one as 64+1 and the negative as 64-1.

A lot of fantastic pictures in this book.

Any idea, what this strange angel has to mean?

Re: Collection: "3 Magi" and "3 theological virtues"

Hi Huck. That's the Cherub. According to Sandler (p. 80) the source is
a pictorial tradition which depends primarily n Ezekiel's vision (1:5-19) of the "living creatures" whose feet were straight, who had two wings covering their bodies, and two wings stretching upward, and who were accompanied by wheels.

There are six wings, each with five feathers. The six wings represent the six acts of morality, "actus morum", "by which the faithful soul must be redeemed if it wishes to come to God by increase of virtues", according to the text on some versions (not this one). Here we have:
Confession, Making Amends, Purity of Body, Purity of Mind; Love of One's Neighbor, Love of God.
The five feathers are the "increments of virtue" for each.
Under Confession, for example, are shedding of tears, forethought in holiness, simplicity of speech, modesty of thought, and prompt obedience. Under Making Amends are restraint in hearing, modesty in seeing, withdrawal from smelling, temperance in tasting, and refraining from touching--that is, controls on the five senses.
But it would seem that smelling and touching are particularly dangerous!

The wheel's spokes have on them the seven works of mercy:
'I clothe [the naked]'; I give to drink'; 'I feed [the hungry]'; 'I console [the captive]'; 'I harbour [the pilgrim]'; 'I visit [the sick]'; 'I bury [the dead]'.
The center of the wheel has "Opera miseracordia".

OK? There are 13 of these diagrams in the De Lisle, more or less the same in dozens of other mss., give or take a few. We've discussed four of the diagrams.

I found this link to an assertion of mine about the 7 Palla of the Medicis getting to 6 dated from May 1465.
The post is old but was not confirmed .
So...confirmation now

[quote="Huck"

...

Much later (in Trionfi.com's time, maybe 2005 ?) it was confirmed by an information found by Alain Bougearel, that the change "from 7 palle to 6 palle" indeed happened parallel to Lorenzo's journey in May 1465.

See also :

Louis XI donna , au mois de Mai 1465, des lettres patentes qui autorisèrent Pierre de Medicis et ses héritiers à porter trois fleurs de lys dans leurs armoiries.

So the evolution appears to be probably

Origin = 11
Cosimo l'Ancien = 8
Pierre = 6 +1 = 7
Lorenzo = 6

Cosimo Ier : confirmation

No, I don't think so. The situation is so, that one has a document of 1465 (about 6 palle, and this is Piero de Medici's time) and that not all productions after 1465 were done in this style. I don't have seen any suggestion in the style, that you suggest.

Well then this data is erroneous ...

http://www.horizons-graphiques.com/hera ... lason.html

"La famille des Médicis a dominé l’histoire de Florence du XIVe au XIXe siècle. Grands bâtisseurs, les Médicis ont laissé leur empreinte sur la ville de Florence mais également dans bon nombre de cités où les Médicis ont prospéré. Leurs armoiries blasonnent comme suit (3 blasonnements, un seul blason) :

Blason des Médicis
« D’or à six tourteaux mis en orle, cinq de gueules, celui en chef d’azur chargé de trois fleurs de lis d’or. »

« D’or à cinq tourteaux de gueules, posés 2, 2 et 1 ; surmontés d’un autre tourteau d’azur, chargé de trois fleurs de lys d’or. »

« D’or à six tourteaux, posés 1, 2, 2, 1, celui du chef d’azur chargé de trois fleurs de lys d’or, les cinq autres de gueules. »

Anyway, the post of today was about the reference of Blanchard linked to Louis XI May 1465 and giving 3 fleurs de Lys to Pierre de Medecis.

The only question i ask myself is whether the transition is from :
7 palles or 5 palles to the final 6 - Louis XI lettres patentes of 1465.

Some authors gives 7.
Others gives 5.

And for the original most ancient,
some authors give 11
others 12
!
