Castle Issogna, Val d'Aosta ... playing card picture

A playing card picture is given in Kaplan Encyclopedia II, p. 3 ... Kaplan gives an artist Giacomo Jaquerio, who worked 1415- 1453, but on the web I found a dating of c. 1490-1500.

Here's the best I have for the Issogne cardplayers.

http://www.rosscaldwell.com/italy/issognecards.jpg

The man on the left has a pile of cards with what looks like a low card of the suit of Bastoni on top; he is holding a drink, perhaps beer, in his left hand.

The man with his back to us is taking a drink.

The woman is holding his arm from across the table, perhaps to get his attention while she points at the fight breaking out at the end of the table.

The guys at the other end are playing backgammon, with the facing man pointing angrily at the board, and the other guy turning up his hand, as if saying "what?".

The next two guys are playing Nine Men's Morris. There doesn't seem to be a dispute.
