After a long pause between 1588-1604 the notes become very active. Well, a king (Henry III) died in 1589, a new king appeared (Henry IV) and he married in 1600 an Italian princess. Perhaps the reason for this pause. Henry IV might have needed some time to discover the Italian impact.

Barthely de Laffemas, who is active in 1605 (see above) has a long biography here (a protestant and an economiste)
https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barth%C3% ... e_Laffemas
Possibly a good man to make playing cards a good business for the state.

After 1606 there are lots of notes.

There is a lot of activity c1606 when I think new rules, re taxation are instituted - there is also some rush to get 'compagnons' ratified as Master cartiers (some 20 are dispersed between cardmakers ' jurors for ratification) -

Card playing reported to be very popular with Henry IV and his court -

From Renourd I found these entries for cartiers, I have not checked yet for duplication with what I have already:

(Arch. Nat., Y 9306 bis.) 25 février 1594

1595 Simon Auget est reçu maître-cartier. (Arch. Nat., Y 9306 bis.) 10 février 1595

There are at least 3 Jean Guymier cardmakers over this period - Jean Guymier c1650 would be Jean Guymier IV?

Guymiers seem to be particularly active in the notaries (Jaques Guymier was himself a notary), and many references to other cardmakers we have seem often to be mentioned at the same time as one of them!y

As well as Jean Guymier (I, II & III) 1483 / 1506 / 1512 /1542 / 1554 / 1555 /1586 / 1592 / 1594, we have from Reynourd:

Jean Saulnyer 1587
Lauren Taupin 1592 / 1594
Pierre Marolle 1586 / 1592 / 1594
Simon Auget 1595

(Guyon Guymier is also mentioned 1555, but not specifically as a cartier)

I was particularly interested in the circle of Parisien cardmakers circa 1540 - 1650 as most likely time period & place in relation to the anonymous parisien tarot -- hence the title as on the cards: FAICT A PARIS PAR -- I will check that thread and see if there that is missed --

For Tarot and Tarots there is not much till 1604 ... in these "new" old documents. One for 1586 and one for 1588.

There is no doubt, that there were French playing card producers in France. The question is, how much of them made Tarot cards.
Well, it's nice, that the playing card background becomes obvious, of course.

Who knows, possibly many of them, but only three we can be fairly sure about, as they are specifically mentioned as makers of tarot cards:

Jean Guymier 1586
Pierre Marolle 1586
Nicolas Marosiaud 1610

We also know the Guymier family produced cards with latin suits earlier than this, among the inventory of the deceased Jacques Guymier in 1537 are small cards with batons, and among that of his brother Jean in 1538 are three moulds for batons with the name Jehan Guymier (Cartes a Jouer et tarots de Marseille: la donation Camoin, p186)*: and the use of latin suits (generally more like spanish than Italian) in France was usually limited to games of tarot or aluette -- (the aluette having many factors in common with the anonymous paris tarot)

Of course, neither Vieville nor Noblet are described as makers of tarot cards in the references we have, but we know they did by the survival of the actual cards - so we cannot place to much emphasis on whether individuals are specifically described as tarot makers or not --

Would the arrival of Mary de Medici perhaps, provide a stimulus for great tarot activity post 1600? The cartier best placed to respond to an interest at court would be Jean Guymier, Valet to the King?

SteveM
