Re: The 1000th thread: We need a better sorting

Just for my information Huck:

When I go to the "Board Index" I can see that your notion of "1000 total topics" is confirmed at the page bottom in the "statistics section" - but when I add the topics mentioned and counted on the page itself thereat in the "topics column" they add up to 804 topics only.

So my question is this:
Are there any "hidden topics" (196!) here on Tarot History?
Maybe in the "THE PRIVATE ROOMS section" which stays "blanc" for me when I click it?

Nearly 200 topics that are not available for a registered member (like me) would surely interest me!
Can you tell me how to get access to them - because you seem to know the ways around here?

But maybe I misread or overread something in the FAQ or did I make a mistake of some sort?

(I just found that the "THE PRIVATE ROOMS section" is available for me too - must have been a bug with my browser I suppose - but there are only 178 topics accounted for - what leaves just 18 to be left out - so not so much of a biggie - but still: do you know where those 18 are?)

The missing 18 are just "lost threads", mostly such, which never had a content or possibly which the moderator had chosen to delete. Maybe spams, I don't know.
The Forum software still remembers, that the numbers once were "used", otherwise it would get problems with the correct operation of the internal links. So it are now 1000 threads, though only 982 can be visited.

I remember, that I once created a lost thread by accident. ... .-) ... I don't remember, how I did it. You don't see the private rooms, if you're not logged in.

Re: The 1000th thread: We need a better sorting

I finally have a few thoughts. The issue is how to find things more easily than at present. Well, we have a search engine. So the issue is in part to how to make the search engine work better for us. Another thing we use is thread titles. So there is also how to make thread titles work for us better.

1. It is not a good thing that we have a thousand threads. So don't open a new thread unless it is really a new topic. Instead, build on an existing thread. It is easier to search a thread than it is the whole forum. It is easier to use the search engine than it is to go through pages and pages of thread titles. On the other hand, doing so makes it harder to follow a line of thought: there may be several going on at once. So if you are adding something on a line of thought that got interrupted by something else, give a link to the post you are responding to.

2. On the other other hand, thread titles are also useful, for identifying current topics of interest and when the search engine won't give you what you need. If it is a thread you yourself have opened, it seems valid to me to change the thread title after the fact so as to include the new related area. However make a note at the beginning of the thread that you have done this.

3. Don't use obscure places like "exhibition gallery" and private rooms unless all you are doing is talking about a modern version of an old deck or have a real need for privacy, such as avoiding Interpol or something. Stick to the first three "Main Rooms". Since mostly we do use those three, I at least forget to search the others.

4. Make sure you have plenty of specific terms in your post, as the search engine won't look for general terms like "Visconti", "Cary", etc. I mean here specific terms that someone might use in a search, not obscure things like the Vatican manuscript number, unless it is one that is cited often enough that people could use it as a search item.

5. Avoid posting only photocopies of texts when you can, as the search engine won't search them. OCR software is a useful tool, which is available for free on the Internet if you can restrict its use to the page or two in question. The photocopy is good as a reference, but the post itself should contain the relevant details that someone might recall in a search, actually written out in a form the search engine can recognize. The best way is to write out the whole quote, which if long can be done using OCR software. Then, too, someone else can run it through Google Translate in their own preferred language and get an idea what is being said.

Added later: 6. Create threads especially to link to other threads, and to specific posts within them, e.g. Huck's abot my translations of Pratesi. These might go in a special place, but I hate to say that, because once there they can easily get forgotten. I think better would be to invent a specific search term that would bring up only these threads, and mention what that term is somewhere in the "Reception" area. ("Overview" won't work, because the search engine currently gives 70 answers. Ubersicht?)

It's a longer time ago.

I made meanwhile some research about the threads in this part of the forum, puzzled by a not expected strong increase of the VIEWS number of the thread "Trionfi.com: News and Updates", which although rather inactive had moved from 104.000 to 116.000. Maybe the observation 104.000 was mid of the year (or later), I don't know, when I got attention about it. Your post came at 30th of September. I noted something of 128.000 for the 28th of October. I calculated then, that the thread would capture the leading thread "The 5x14 Theory: An Investigation" part II" (then about 142.000) at around end of December and before both threads would reach 150.000.

So it happened yesterday, around 18.30 local time.

Image

In this period there were days, when the number of VIEWS increased at one day about 1000 points, there were also days with only 100.
I don't know the reason, I suspect, that one of the pictures is very successful for unknown reasons. We have usually 10-50 visitors in 20 minutes, an average might be 25-30. If I multiply this number with 72 (3x24 hours), one gets about 2000 a day. It's hardly imaginable, that the half of it clicks on a page connected to this thread, and that in a regular manner.
The only possible answer seems to be, that the search engines (the not human visitors) have a special favor for it. Or that these read the number of views and frequent the pages, which stand high in the views, more often.

If things stay like this, one can expect, that "Trionfi.com etc." reaches 200.000 visitors in c. 100-150 days, and the "5x14-thread" in roughly 300-450 days. Perhaps even earlier.

I've analyzed the number of views, according the given 15 pages (the 16th is too small) of the Forum "Researcher studies":

Nearly the half of the 2 1/2 millions of views in the researcher Forum appear on the first page of the VIEWS. The second page has nearly 1/6th of it. The 3rd an 4th another "nearly 1/6th". The rest (the other 11 pages") have about 20%.

Well, one might ask, why are these 25 threads of the first page of Views running so well, and others not. Naturally the number of posts and the age play logical roles.

15 of the 25 threads on the 1st VIEWS list appear also at the 1st REPLIES list. Their presence is explained by "many posts".

Spanish cartomancy, help with translation - no pictures at all
good and rare pictures - The Pope with the donkey / "Oldest Tarot"

good and rare pictures - Tarot-like images in a c.1420 manuscript
good and rare pictures - Framed Story: Folengo's Tarocchi sonnets
Sola-Busca riddles - has the Sola-Busca pictures, but ...
Themes and Games - is an old thread, has become slow

"Tarot was originally based on the Roman Catholic religion." and "Spanish cartomancy, help with translation" are a riddle. Perhaps one has to assume, that "Tarot" and "Roman catholic religion" is attractive in the search engine, also the word "Cartomancy" in the title might caused visitors.

I counted totally 1339397 VIEWS at 2016, December 29, about 20:30 MEZ at the first page of the VIEWS. 160.000 VIEWS for the highest thread was reached a few minutes ago.

Image

Well, the time around Christmas and before New Year might be a good time for web pages with Tarot content, better than usual.

The other picture (see post before) I took short after midnight in the morning at 18 December 10 a.m, I would estimate, maybe roughly 250 hours ago.
At least my counting likely happened then: 1270787 (first page of VIEWS in the researcher's study)

1339397/1270787 = 1.05399
which means, that in the last 250 hours the number of views for the first page increased about 5.4 % in the last 10 1/2 days against the number of views between March 2008 (begin of the Forum) and December 18, 2016 (roughly
3190 days).

I had experienced an unusual behavior of the VIEWS numbers at the end of last year, and started to collect them occasionally.
Mostly I only observed the 1st page of the Researcher study subforum.

At 18th of December 2016 I wrote:

Well, it didn't run bad, now about 43 days later, the thread has about 172.000 visitors now totally. But the views number continue to behave "very crazy" ...

From the period 28 October - 19th December 2016 I can say, that the daily views on the 25 leading threads had been c. 3000, from which one can estimate the views of the Researcher Study subforum as "a little bit above 6000" in this period.
In the period 19th December 2016 till 8th of January I observed, that these values had been doubled. "c. 6000 daily views at the 25 leading threads".
At 9th of January (a Monday) till now (30th of January) there was total break down of these numbers. I estimate this period at less than 600 views daily, I saw values of 200 at a day and in 2 cases c. 1500, but these both only caused by somehow crazy action (2 threads had suddenly 1000 views more).

Well, one part of the strange features might be, that a lot of people had holidays around Christmas ... I don't know. I'm still puzzled by this behavior of the numbers.

I made a list at 30th of December:
I made another counting of the VIEWS of the threads.

5. 5943+4400

etc.
I made additions for 20th of January and 30th of January
At 20th of January I made a calculation of the percentages of the increase factor till then (only at researcher study). For the value of 30th of January I added the number difference to the values of 20th of January (just to show, that in this 10-days-period not much had happened.

For the other subforum I added the percentage number of 30th of January.
