Re: Wenzel-bible

I think Marcos' point about the hat seen on the earliest Emperor cards is still valid. It's not just any hat but the particular style of hat often shown being worn by Sigismund, King of Germany, Bohemia, and Hungary, as well as Emperor. Looking at the examples on this exibition site: http://www.sigi...

Re: Carnival collection

Thanks for those posts, Huck. As I understand it many carnival festivals do not have a continuous history but died out during the course of the 1700s and were not restarted until the following century. And it shows in one of the pictures that you posted which was similar to this one that I posted in...

Re: The Hanged Man

Thanks, Huck.

Not sure whether to believe Foucault. Venice might be a better idea because of its longstanding connection with carnival. Due to their lack of roads they would have had a reason to use real ships in their celebrations.

Re: The Hanged Man

Huck, why was it a Ship of Fools? What was the significance of the ship? This manuscript illustration of carnival in Nuremberg in 1539 shows a float in the form of a ship is being hauled through the streets accompanied by the carnival fools. http://i937.photobucket.com/albums/ad213/Alistair_Craig/Hi...

Popess, Empress and Queens I need to make another adjustment. The Emperors group seems too small to to be considered as a set of trump cards on it's own. Instead, it should be seen as supplementary to the main groups that were decorated with the themes of Petrarch and philosophy. The Emperor and th...

Re: Themes and Games

The Fool Without other cards alongside it to make a recognisable theme it's difficult to be definite about the Fool's purpose. As the subject doesn't seem suitable for a card that outranks other cards as a trump would, it may be that this was an example of the other type of special card used in gam...

Re: Themes and Games

Thanks, Huck, that's a nice exposition of your thoughts on the origins of Karnöffel and the relation of the Tarot to normal cards. Karnöffel/Imperatori - game is the father of the later Tarot cards That's what I've been implying here. Tarot developed from the usual card deck Agreed. Karnöffel ... th...

Re: Themes and Games

A short summary I've made some changes since the original post so I'll restate the current situation briefly. It is suggested here that the Tarot trumps were divided into three main groups representing sets of trump cards of different sizes and each decorated with it's own theme: Emperors http://i9...
